Long COVID describes continuing or new symptoms after COVID-19 infection. It can affect daily life, health and wellbeing.

Public Health Scotland (PHS) contributes to our understanding of long COVID within a wider group of post-infectious and associated complex chronic syndromes (PACCS).

What we have done

  • Worked to prevent and control COVID infection.
  • Used health data and evidence to improve understanding of the population impact of long COVID.
  • Examined differences in risk, access, experience and outcomes within the limits of being able to identify definitive diagnoses.
  • Synthesised evidence and provided public health advice.
  • Contributed evaluation expertise and supported learning from previous activity.
  • Worked with Scottish Government, NHS boards, researchers and third-sector partners to gain shared understanding of long Covid.

What we are doing

We will maintain a focus on prevention, population health intelligence and inequalities – exploring what is possible to measure using routine data sources.

What others are doing

  • Diagnosing and treating individuals.
  • Commissioning and delivering local long COVID services.
  • Setting national policy.
