About this release

As part of Public Health Scotland’s commitment to providing clear, concise and accessible viral respiratory data, there have been some improvements to the presentation this season’s viral respiratory report. These have included updates to the accessibility of figures presented in the report and a change in the title of the report from Viral respiratory diseases (including influenza and COVID-19) in Scotland surveillance report to Viral respiratory diseases in Scotland surveillance report.

This weekly release by Public Health Scotland presents epidemiological information on respiratory infection activity, including COVID-19, across Scotland. Due to the dynamic nature of all datasets included in this report, figures contained within each update may be subject to change in future releases. Any revised figures will then be reflected within the latest update.

Main points

For the period, 26 January to 1 February 2026 (ISO week 5):

  • The proportion of NHS24 calls due to respiratory symptoms remained at baseline activity level. GP consultations for both influenza-like illness (ILI) and acute respiratory infections (ARI) remained at baseline activity levels overall in week 5.
  • Laboratory-confirmed influenza cases continued to decrease to 125 in week 5, following a peak of 1,994 in week 50 (2025), with overall activity remaining at baseline for this week. Test positivity shows a decrease in CARI surveillance. Hospital admissions due to influenza also decreased from 139 to 82, with individuals aged 75 years and older accounting for 29.3% of admissions.
  • RSV laboratory‑confirmed case decreased to low levels in week 5. Test positivity decreased to 8.1% from 9.9%. Test positivity remained stable in CARI surveillance. Hospital admissions due to RSV also decreased; the highest proportion occurred in under 1 age group followed by the 1–4 age group.
  • COVID-19 laboratory activity remained stable and within baseline activity overall, but activity increased in 5–14 from low to medium and decreased in the under 1 and 1-4, declining from low to baseline and high to medium respectively. Hospitalisations decreased to 77 in week 5 from 85 in week 4.
  • Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) laboratory activity decreased to low, while adenovirus activity decreased to baseline. However, in CARI surveillance hMPV and seasonal coronavirus once again showed a statistically significant 4-week increase.
  • All-cause excess mortality increased to low activity in week 2, the latest week not impacted by reporting delays.
